Unreliable Wireless Internet Connection

I would like to make an announcement.

My wireless network connection fuctions spasmodically, often sending out bytes but receiving none; though Firefox and Google Talk are unable to connect, "Windows [does] not detect problems with this connection."

Wireless Network Connection (linksys)
Speed: 11.0 Mbps
Signal Strength: Very Good
Status: Connected
I'll wait forever, trying to connect to a wireless network, or repair my current connection, or realize I've been watching my computer hang for the past ten minutes. I'll suddenly find myself plowing through the internet, with steroidal bursts of cyberspeed frequently interrupted by seconds-long breaks in connectivity.

That is all. Goodnight, and happy Chanukah.

The chickens is home to roost, y'all.

What a revolting development this is!

I haven't felt like this November. On a mostly unrelated note, I davened shacharis today. I need to learn how to put on tefillin without cutting off the blood circulation in my arm.

My First Shabbos

This weekend was my first time keeping Shabbos on my own. It just feels right. Keeping the Shabbos is easy in this environment, with the Chabad House right on campus. It'll be harder at home; we'll see what happens. In Brooklyn it'll be easier, especially if I end up in Crown Heights.

Rabbi Adelman seemed especially pleased that I decided I want to keep Shabbos from now on. Everyone I told was definitely supportive, but I think Rabbi Simcha and Rabbi Adelman were perhaps even proud of me. I made them hug me goodbye on my way out, after havdallah. Sender was standing right there, so I hugged him too. I like that most of these guys are openly affectionate. It's a warm feeling.

I always wanted to have a beard.

Think of the striking portraits of Abraham Lincoln or Ulysses S. Grant: is it possible in this day and age that we will have a woman president sooner than a bearded one? (And, while we're on the subject, do you think we will ever have a bearded lady as president?)

I heard Dave Davies on the radio tonight.

Not that Dave Davies, the other Dave Davies. He was subbing for Terry Gross on Fresh Air. I caught the tail end of his interview with John Madden. Not that John Madden, the other John Madden. They commiserated with one another on sharing names with big, famous celebrities.

Dave Davies
"If you Google my name, the first 9,000 hits will be the lead guitarist for the Kinks."

John Madden
"I don't even know quite what he looks like, but I know he doesn't look like me. He's rather larger than me, isn't he?"
And then I walk into my building and these two guys down the hall from me are blasting the Kinks' Village Green Preservation SocietyPosted by Picasa

Mo Rocca signed my balls.

I guess I should mention that Mo Rocca did a free show at UMass tonight. He's a really admirable guy. And he autographed my parking ticket from 9/28/04. Posted by Picasa

I had started cleaning up by this point. The temperature in the fridge was set too low, which is why the can exploded in the first place. Ground Zero was a sludgy mess, and the walls, ceiling, and floor of the fridge were sprayed with a viscous residue. Posted by Picasa

Weird Tales of the Ramones, review by Tom Erlewine

As wonderful as this is, there is a melancholy undercurrent to this whole set. The trajectory of the band's music itself is a little sad. What was once so bracing and fresh starts to slowly stagnate only a few years after their 1976 debut. While these three discs do a decent job of camouflaging the group's decline -- not only did Johnny Ramone do an excellent job of cherry-picking the best moments from uneven records, great bands like the Ramones are always listenable and rarely truly bad -- their songwriting turned flat somewhere after 1985, and their productions were getting too hard, glossy, and polished well before that, all of which makes the last half of this set a little hard to get through in one sitting.

I got new glasses.

My sentiments exactly.

That I perceive a distinction between my own level of nerdity relative to others is probably itself illusory, but the notion must be maintained if I am to continue behaving with a smug superiority.

At least it's not another boob fest.

So I guess this isn't as bad as the secret shopper ads, but would somebody please explain to me what this woman has to do with Sprint PCS? She's not talking on a cell phone. Is she holding a cell phone in her right hand, the one that's hidden from view? As far as I can tell, there's no cell phone in this ad. Just the Sprint logo and a bunch of text.

Back pockets optional.

I think the nerdiest kind of pants a person could ever wear would be pleated blue jeans, with tapered legs and an elastic waistband.

I love Charlie Haden

To make music that's going to have some effect in a positive way on people's lives. To touch their lives in a beautiful, positive way and to help them recognize the deep qualities that are inside themselves. To play as much beautiful music as I can for as many people as I can.

I was downtown.

Went to New York with my friend Julie to see the JVC Jazz Festival at the Knitting Factory. We agreed that the highlights were the Ben Allison Trio and the Kurt Rosenwinkel Quartet. The show was running 45min behind by the time Kurt went on, and he only had time to play three tunes. So that was disappointing. On the other hand, Mark Turner made a surprise appearance and played with Kurt. I heard a saxophone offstage and I was like, "That sounds just like Mark Turner..." And then Turner walks out onstage and I nearly freaked out. Julie really dug his sound, which is cool. Actually, she really dug the whole show. We had a great time. The end.
